strel v1.2.7 is a computer program, written in Stata®, that can be used to carry out relative survival analyses. The program first estimates the net mortality rates for subjects, in each of a set of predefined intervals following the initial event, for example diagnosis of cancer, using the maximum likelihood method (Estève et al., 1990). The relative survival is defined as the observed survival in the study group divided by the expected survival of a comparable group from the general population. Cumulative crude and relative survival rates are then calculated and tabulated for exact times after the initialising event.
